SHOULD WE REALLY BLAME THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM ??

I recently read an article by Sagarika Ghose in HT abt the movie 3 Idiots and the current education system. The author very rightly observes that the movie, though a wonderful watch, is not meant to be taken seriously. I quote from the article "And, of course, we are not meant to take 3 Idiots too seriously, as it is after all just about having an escapist laugh and not thinking too much. After all, if you think too much you may discover that 3 Idiots is a dangerous, preachy and sanctimonious film that disdains all forms of hard work; that subliminally condemns studying as a pathetic exercise in rote learning and scorns the sadhna of higher education."
The current higher educational system may hv its shortcomings. No system/individual is ideal and scope of improvement is certainly there. However, what the movie does is simply elaborate them (in a comical way) without suggesting ne solutions. Its very easy to criticize a system/an individual; however, the problem as is shown in the movie, is more or less known to most whom 3 Idiots team would include in their target audiences. What is needed is not just criticism but also a solution to it and "3 Idiots" surely fails there. Surely the inspirational speech by Baba Ranchoddas is no good for those who study just for marks. Everyone hears such speeches almost daily !!! Even the simple solutions, for eg, hving more open book exams (wherein students are allowed to take books/notes etc inside the exam hall) instead of closed books were lacking in the movie.
Also, I personally feel that if we do some introspection, we would realize that more than the system, its our attitude thats the problem. May be, the educational system rewards those who don't understand the subject and do rote learning, but surely, it does not punish those who comprehend the subjects and study for knowledge... (this is shown in the movie too when Rancho secures top rank with Silencer around, though there is a diff b/w real and reel life; however i made the above comment on the basis of my personal experience during college life)... so, surely, like many other things, it depends on the individual whether he wants to study for marks or for knowledge .... the current system leaves that choice to the individual concerned .... probably, the problem is we want ppl who do rote learning to get lesser marks, and not strive for excellence (study for knowledge) ourselves ... and therefore, we tend to blame the system ...
also, the following 2 excerpts from the article are truly food for the thinking mind:
1) "caution has to be exercised that urban middle class children are not pampered into thinking that anything that causes ‘stress’ is evil and should be attacked and, worse, not be even attempted." Personally, I feel that upto some extent, stress does improve performance, and if some1 is over stressing himself i believe its the prob with the person concerned ... its like abusing a catalyst to performance, surely if u overdose a medicine, it does more harm than good ... also, there is no clear cut demarcation where stress ceases to be a catalyst to performance...it depends on the individual
2) Encouraging students to abuse their teachers, hate their books, throw metaphorical tomatoes at all centres of excellence is to encourage an illiterate lumpen rage against anything that isn’t dumbed down to the shocking level of intellectual nothingness

well, i ceratinly dont mean that the system is ideal ... but what i want to say is its always introspection that helps ... sometimes, i feel that the easiest thing in the world is to blame the system / others for one's failure .. but one must remember tht the same system has produced geniuses, so, it cannot be 100% wrong either .. and surely its not ideal ...

  4. Hi manuj,

A well written and nicely expressed view! But, I would like to say that if 3 idiots is a movie on one end of the spectrum, then Sagarika Ghose's article is right on the other end. The points which impressed me in the movie were not "feeling jealous of people who rote learn and score" or the "subliminal condemnation of study" or the "encouragement for commenting on teachers".

What I liked in the movie is the stress on the point that one should do what one feels passionate about! Rancho liked to engineer like Angad or Shubham at our college if you remember.

Those guys even though they had and showcased extraordinary talent some of them failed to go past 6 CGPA 'cause they didnt study Math, management or physics or dynamics of social change!

Inadvertantly one would blame the system for want of a better reason!!!!

I totally accept that attitude is the best thing. A bad attitude can ruin one even in a good system whereas a good attitude will make one shine even if the system is bad to an extent.

There have been millions of success stories in our system so is it bad? We are today producing the largest and some of the foremost technocrats every year! But, the cream of the politicians, celebrities, corporate bigwigs send their kids abroad from a very young age to get educated. WHY?

Is it because they have a lot of money or because they consider other systems better? I am really trying to find the answer.

Whatever it is.. a student I feel should take things positively and work with the system then he can do WELL. (Though, I do not know how to define WELL :( ).

  5. Hi Ravi (Honcho), gr8 to see such a critical comment from u brother on my article ... thanx
    1) u might not hv been impressed by the points "subliminal condemnation of (higher) study" or the "encouragement for commenting on teachers" in the movie but dont u think that the movie did insinuate at those aspects of education ?? and the repeated claim of Dr Virus of his college being the best: does that not point to the premier and the most competent professional colleges of India ?? surely, the point that impressed u is good, but prob, the movie just does not concentrate on that, and so, the comment that the movie is not meant to be taken very seriously !!
2)u gave the examples of angad and shubham .. i hope our discussion today made my points regarding them clear to u (and i dont find ne point of elaborating that here coz many of those reading it might hv no idea abt them) ... though i feel that some part of the discussion is remaining and we can prob continue on that netime later ...
3)good to see us agreeing on that attitude part ... i hv to give credit to our discussions in college for me hving that opinion .. so, again, thanx brother !!!
4)and for ur point of bigwigs (corporate, celebs, etc) sending their kids abroad to study, i dont think i can possibly comment on their mentality (ie whether they hv a lot of money or they consider other systems better) ... however, i can surely say that neither our system, nor ne other, is ideal and scope of improvement is always there ... so, its not just elaborating problems but also suggesting solutions to them that matters ...
    5) we can prob discuss on the last point of urs (defining WELL) on gtalk ....

P.S. believe me ravi, i enjoyed posting this reply to ur comment as much as i enjoyed writing the article ... and i surely look forward to discussing with u some of the wonderful criticism that u mentioned !!

  6. Personally I didn't really like Five Point Someone that much, with all its cliched stuff (I'm assuming the movie storyline is similar :p)...I guess though, the system is often so hard to change in our colleges, that statements like those made in the book/movie become a sort of rallying point for people who hate the drawbacks of the system, without inspecting it fully.
